In printing, certain artwork can be solid black. But for wordings, it is advisable not to have CMYK on the characters. This is particularly important when sending your artwork for litho offset printing.

What is Solid Black and what is Flat Black?
What is Solid Black and what is Flat Black?

šŸ–¤ 1ļøāƒ£ What is 100K (Flat Black)?

C 0 / M 0 / Y 0 / K 100

This uses only black ink.

āœ” Characteristics:

  • Slightly lighter black

  • Can look greyish on large areas

  • Very sharp edges

  • No registration issues

āœ… When to Use 100K:

Use 100K ONLYĀ for:

  • Small text (especially below 12pt)

  • Fine lines

  • Barcodes

  • Small details

  • Body copy

Why?

Because:

  • It prints with one plate only (K plate)

  • No risk of color misregistration

  • Text stays sharp and clean

šŸ‘‰ If you use rich black on small text, even slight misalignment causes blurry edges or color halos.

šŸ–¤ 2ļøāƒ£ What is Rich Black (CMYK Black)?

Example:

  • C60 M40 Y40 K100OR

  • C100 M100 Y100 K100 (very heavy — not always recommended)

This mixes black with cyan, magenta, and yellow.

āœ” Characteristics:

  • Deeper, darker black

  • Looks more solid

  • Better for large coverage

  • More ink density

āœ… When to Use Rich Black:

Use Rich Black for:

  • Large background areas

  • Big headlines

  • Solid black boxes

  • Large graphics

  • Packaging designs

Why?

Because:

  • 100K alone looks washed out on large surfaces

  • Rich black gives depth and density

  • Prevents ā€œgrey-lookingā€ background

⚠ Important: Ink Limit (TAC – Total Area Coverage)

In Malaysia (especially for offset), most printers prefer:

  • 260% – 300% total ink coverage max

Example:C60 + M40 + Y40 + K100 = 240% āœ… (safe)

But:C100 + M100 + Y100 + K100 = 400% āŒ (too heavy)→ Can cause:

  • Slow drying

  • Smudging

  • Paper curling

  • Set-off

šŸŽÆ Professional Printing Tip

Many professional designers use:

Recommended Rich Black Formula (Safe for Offset & Digital):šŸ‘‰ C60 M40 Y40 K100oršŸ‘‰ C40 M30 Y30 K100

These give deep black without over-inking.

🚫 Common Mistake

āŒ Using Rich Black for small textResult:

  • Blurry edges

  • Registration problems

  • Client complains print is ā€œout of focusā€
